If you are responsible for a crane or hoist on site, a clear checklist for crane inspection is one of the simplest ways to catch a developing fault before it becomes downtime, or worse, a safety incident. 

This guide sets out what to check, how often to check it, who should be doing the checking, and how gantry crane inspection differs from overhead crane inspection, so you can build an inspection routine that fits your equipment and your site.

Why crane inspection matters for facility managers

A crane or hoist works hard, and most of the wear that leads to failure builds up gradually: a frayed wire rope, a worn brake lining, a hook that has opened slightly under repeated load. Regular inspection is what catches these issues while they are still a maintenance job, and not a breakdown.

For facility and maintenance managers, inspection also carries a compliance dimension. Under AS2550.1-2011 Clause 7.3.4, each crane is required to undergo a periodic third-party inspection to provide independent advice on whether the level of maintenance and repair is in line with the standard. 

A documented inspection routine gives you a clear record that this obligation is being met, alongside the operational benefit of fewer unplanned breakdowns. This guide reflects current AS2550.1-2011 requirements and inspection practice as of 2026.

Pre-operational (daily) checks

A quick visual and functional check before the crane is used for the day. This is typically completed by the operator and covers obvious issues: unusual noise, visible damage, warning lights, control response and general condition.

Periodic (routine) inspections

A more thorough, scheduled inspection carried out at a set interval, commonly monthly or quarterly depending on the crane's duty, meaning how heavily and how often it is used. This looks past the surface at wear points such as wire rope condition, hook wear, brake performance and structural fasteners.

Periodic third-party inspection

A periodic third-party inspection is generally carried out at least once every 12 months by a competent person who is independent of the crane's routine servicing and maintenance.

The inspection provides an independent assessment of the crane's overall condition and checks whether maintenance and repairs are being carried out appropriately. More frequent inspections may be required for cranes that are used heavily, operate in harsh conditions or are subject to higher levels of wear.

For most facility managers, this means planning for a third-party crane inspection every 12 months, alongside more frequent pre-operational checks and routine servicing.

The core crane inspection checklist

Whatever the crane type, most inspections work through the same broad categories. Use this as the base checklist, then add the gantry-specific or overhead-specific points below depending on your equipment.

Structural components

Check the bridge, end trucks, legs (where fitted) and any welds or connection points for cracks, corrosion, deformation or loose fasteners.

Wire ropes and chains

Look for fraying, kinking, corrosion or visible wear along the length of the rope or chain, and check that it is running correctly through sheaves or over the hoist drum.

Hooks and load-bearing attachments

Check the hook for deformation, cracks, wear at the load-bearing point and correct operation of the safety latch.

Brakes and controls

Test that brakes hold and release smoothly, and that all controls, including limit switches and emergency stops, respond correctly.

Electrical systems

Check wiring, connections and control panels for damage, and confirm warning devices and safety interlocks are functioning.

Gantry crane inspection checklist: what's different

Whether you are running a single girder gantry crane or a double girder gantry crane, a gantry crane is supported by its own legs rather than a building structure, so its inspection needs to account for the extra points of contact with the ground or floor. 

On top of the core checklist above, a gantry crane inspection should also cover:

  • Leg and base condition: check legs, castors or wheels for wear, damage or misalignment, since these carry the full load path to the ground.

  • Running surface: check the floor, rail or ground surface the crane travels on for unevenness, damage or debris that could affect stability or travel.

  • Portability and locking mechanisms: for a portable or semi-portable gantry, check that wheel locks, outriggers or stabilisers are secure and functioning before use.

  • Weather exposure: if the gantry crane operates outdoors or in a semi-enclosed area, check for corrosion or weather-related wear that an indoor overhead crane would not be exposed to.

Overhead crane inspection checklist: what's different

Whether you are running a single girder bridge crane or a double girder bridge crane, an overhead crane runs on a runway fixed to the building structure, so its inspection needs to account for how the crane interacts with that structure. 

Alongside the core checklist, an overhead crane inspection should also cover:

  • Runway alignment: check that the runway beam is straight and level, since misalignment increases wear on wheels and the bridge structure.

  • Bridge and runway wheel wear: check wheel condition on both the bridge and the runway, as uneven wear here is often an early sign of alignment issues.

  • Headroom and clearance: confirm the crane maintains safe clearance from the building structure, fittings and other equipment throughout its full travel path.

  • Power feed systems: check festoon systems or cable reels supplying power to the bridge and hoist for wear, damage or incorrect tracking.

Recording and documenting your inspections

A checklist is only useful if the results are recorded. For each inspection, keep a record of the date, the crane identified by a unique reference, who carried out the inspection, what was checked, any faults found and the action taken. 

This record supports your maintenance planning and gives you a clear history to refer back to for your periodic third-party inspection under AS2550.1-2011.

What happens if a crane fails inspection

If an inspection identifies a fault, the crane should be taken out of service until the issue is assessed and repaired. Depending on the fault, this might mean a straightforward part replacement, a more involved repair, or a decision that the crane has reached the end of its safe working life.
